"My paintings suggest a journey, a path I am travelling, sometimes simple, quiet and straightforward at other times complex, chaotic and emotionally challenged".
Graham works for Mustard Tree as a Creative Programmes curator.
"Mustard Tree gave me the opportunity to paint again when I arrived at the centre in 2009. where I was in desperate need of love and support. I received both along with much needed forgiveness and chances. As a service user and volunteer I began and developed a series of creative programmes. Creativity and the opportunity to express it have helped changed my life massively, positively and continues to do so.
I work from my studio space within Mustard Tree's art department. My work ranges from explosive, challenging and chaotic through to calm, simple and stylish. Working with layers and attention to detail, I create atmospheric relationships on the canvas. I maintain integrity in my work with a driven intensity in my sketch books and the use of the ipad both of which I refer to constantly. I am regularly inspired by words, written, usually, then working on their meanings I develop ideas until I feel ready to externalise my ideas in order to express the unseen. I use both traditional and experimental methods and materials to create unique and expressive works.
I am a self taught artist. As a child I had a natural gift for drawing and could create quite believable portraits from and early age of around 9 years old. My first and main artistic influence was Jimi Hendrix, who when I was a kid opened my mind to infinite possibilities, especially creativity and my own potential. Inspiring artists include Mark Rothko, Andy Goldsworthy, Patrick Heron and Howard Hodgekin.
